Nigerian doctor Tobechukwu Ezeobi has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of her friend, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a U.S.-based cardiologist who allegedly took his own life.
In an emotional Facebook post on Monday night, Dr. Ezeobi described Erinne as a warm, affectionate, and humble doctor, fondly remembering his infectious laughter and great sense of humor.
“Rest on, dear brother. Rest on ‘my senior colleague’ (lol inside joke). To the one with the warmest smile, highly infectious laughter, and greatest sense of humor. To the most charming, humble, affectionate, intelligent, and easy-going doctor (cardiologist) I ever knew—rest easy… till we meet to part no more,” she wrote.
Alleged Suicide Linked to Child Custody Battle
Dr. Erinne reportedly died by suicide on Sunday, January 26, 2025, following a prolonged custody battle with his ex-wife, Suzzette Chibuogu. Reports initially suggested that a U.S. court ruled in favor of Chibuogu, ordering Erinne to pay $15,000 in monthly child support.
However, his father-in-law, Francis Van Lare, later refuted these claims. He explained that the child support was only $1,900 per month, not $15,000, and that Erinne sometimes made partial payments. He also emphasized that the high support amount was due to the late doctor's son being physically challenged and requiring special care.
While the exact reason for Dr. Erinne’s tragic passing remains unclear, his death has sparked conversations about the mental and emotional toll of custody battles and financial obligations.
