A disturbing video has surfaced online showing teenagers, said to be students of Unity Model School in Asaba, Delta State, writing a WAEC exam late in the evening using torchlight due to lack of electricity in their school.
According to reports, the students were meant to begin the exam by 2 PM, but officials allegedly delayed the delivery of exam papers until around 6 PM. By then, darkness had set in, and the school, which had no power supply, had to rely on torchlights for the students to take the exam.
The video, recorded by an unidentified woman, showed the students seated in a poorly lit classroom while a torchlight was used to provide minimal visibility. The woman, clearly upset by the situation, condemned the exam officials for putting the students through such a stressful and unfair experience.
“It’s not okay,” she said. “Even in our time, when we used lanterns, we were never subjected to this.”
The video has since gone viral, sparking widespread criticism and raising concerns about the conditions under which national examinations are being conducted, especially in schools lacking basic infrastructure.
