‘Obi of Lagos’ Apologizes to Lagos State Government and Oba of Lagos Over Controversial Festival

Chibuike Azubuike, popularly known as the self-proclaimed “Obi of Lagos,” has publicly apologized to the Lagos State Government and the Oba of Lagos following the controversy surrounding his proposed Igbo New Yam Festival in Amuwo Odofin.

Azubuike, who was recently arrested over an alleged fraud case, came under fire after announcing plans to host the cultural festival, which many residents criticized as an attempt to impose Igbo traditions in a predominantly Yoruba state.

In a formal statement published in a national newspaper, Azubuike expressed deep regret over his actions, calling them “unguided” and pledging to act more responsibly in the future.

“I, Mr. Chibuike Azubuike, hereby tender this unreserved apology to the Oba of Lagos, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government, and the good people of Lagos State over my unguided proposal to hold the New Yam Festival scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2025, in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State,” he stated.

He also clarified that the controversial title “Obi of Lagos” was not self-assumed but the result of a printing error, adding that the decision to cancel the event was voluntary and not influenced by political pressure.

“Contrary to insinuations that it was politically driven, I am not a politician. However, if I ever decide to join politics in the future, I would align with the ruling All Progressives Congress to contribute to the progress of Lagos State,” he added.

The apology has since sparked conversations online, with some commending his humility while others questioned his motives and the timing of his retraction.
