“Women Supporting Women in Nollywood Is a Scam” — Bukunmi Oluwasina Speaks Out

Nollywood actress and singer Bukunmi Oluwasina has sparked conversations online after openly criticizing the popular phrase “women supporting women.”

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, the mother of one claimed that female solidarity in the Nigerian film industry is often fake or short-lived.

“Women Supporting Women Na Scam”

Bukunmi said:

“Women supporting women for Nollywood na scam. E no dey always last. Even when dem support each other, we know as e be. But when men support themselves, e dey genuine.”

She argued that the issue is not just in Nollywood but across society.

“Everybody know say woman enemy na fellow woman. Even when dem say women dey support each other, you go feel am say na fake.”

Women Find It Easier to Help Men Than Other Women

Sharing a real-life example, she said:

“You go hear woman borrow man money to start business, but to borrow fellow woman money e go hard. I no blame anybody, but na so e be.”

Hard-Working Women Deserve Better Recognition

Bukunmi also condemned the stereotype that suggests every successful woman has a “sponsor.”

“There are women in the industry wey no get sponsor. Dem dey hustle, dem dey do the work and we dey see am. But others wey dey hide under their success go talk say every woman get sponsor, making their efforts look small.”

Her bold statement has stirred reactions, with some agreeing that fake friendship and competition exist among women, while others argue that unity among women is growing stronger.

The debate continues as Bukunmi’s comments shed light on the reality of support — or the lack of it — among women in the entertainment industry.
