Nigerians recently found and shared an old video of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike speaking against the trend of sending children abroad to study certain courses, especially law. The video resurfaced only days after his son obtained a Master’s degree in Law from King’s College London, causing people to react strongly online.
In the video, Wike, who previously served as governor of Rivers State, argued that many Nigerian students do not need to study abroad for subjects such as English, Economics, and Law. He questioned why parents would spend money sending their children overseas when Nigerian universities already have strong and qualified faculties for these courses. Wike emphasized that the quality of education in Nigerian universities is good enough for these programs, and therefore, sending students abroad is unnecessary.
The timing of the video’s resurfacing sparked public discussion because it appeared to contradict Wike’s personal choice for his son’s education. Many Nigerians questioned the consistency between his past statements and his family’s decision.
