El-Rufai Says He Never Had Personal Relationship with Tinubu

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has clarified that he never had a personal friendship with President Bola Tinubu. Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Monday, El-Rufai explained that his support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election was driven purely by party loyalty and political arrangements, not friendship.

“I was never Tinubu’s friend. We never had a personal relationship like the one I had with General Buhari of blessed memory,” he said.

El-Rufai further explained that his involvement in Tinubu’s rise to the presidency came after consultations within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and broader political considerations. He revealed that Islamic stakeholders from the southwest approached him to support a southwestern Muslim presidential candidate.

He also noted that the zoning understanding within the APC after President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-term tenure made a southern presidency inevitable.

This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about alliances and political dynamics within the APC, highlighting the distinction between political support and personal relationships.
