The Senate has announced plans to hold an emergency plenary sitting on Tuesday following growing public anger over its recent passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
The outrage is mainly linked to the Senate’s decision to reject a clause that would make real-time electronic transmission of election results compulsory.
In a statement, the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, said all senators have been directed to return for the emergency session. According to the notice, Senate President Godswill Akpabio ordered the reconvening of plenary for Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The statement added that the emergency sitting will begin at 12 noon.
The development comes amid strong reactions from stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which has warned of possible nationwide protests and election boycotts. The labour union accused the Senate of creating confusion and taking conflicting positions on the Electoral Act amendments, especially on the issue of electronic transmission of election results.
