Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to withdraw and deactivate passports belonging to individuals who have officially renounced their Nigerian citizenship.
The directive was announced in a statement issued on Saturday through his media aide, Alao Babatunde. It applies to Nigerians whose renunciation requests have been approved by the President, in line with the country’s laws.
According to the minister, the decision is based on provisions in the 1999 Constitution, which state that once a person formally renounces their citizenship and it is approved, they cease to be a Nigerian citizen.
He explained that such individuals are no longer entitled to hold Nigerian documents, including passports, since they are no longer recognized as citizens of the country.
Tunji-Ojo added that the move is part of ongoing reforms in the passport and visa system, aimed at maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s citizenship records and official documents.
