Two Kidnapped UTME Candidates Escape as Police Arrest Suspect in Benue

Two candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) who were abducted by gunmen along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State have regained their freedom.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the development on Friday, April 17, stating that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The victims were among passengers kidnapped on Wednesday night when gunmen attacked a Benue Links bus in Otukpo Local Government Area. Authorities later identified the vehicle as a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Benue Links.

Police spokesperson Udeme Edet disclosed that investigations are ongoing, with tactical teams, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, deployed to track down the abductors and rescue the remaining victims.

She added that security agencies are working together to ensure the safe return of those still in captivity.

The police also clarified that not all passengers on board the bus were UTME candidates, correcting earlier reports.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety on major roads, as efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining victims.
