Popular Nigerian TikToker Hamzat Habeeb, widely known as Peller, has sparked reactions online after questioning a marriage registrar over a legal warning issued during his court wedding to his partner, Jarvis.
The couple, who are set to hold their traditional and white wedding ceremonies later this weekend, officially legalized their union at a court wedding attended by family members, friends, and notable personalities, including media personality Daddy Freeze.
During the ceremony, the marriage registrar reminded the newlyweds of the legal obligations that come with marriage, warning them that violating their marriage vows through bigamy—marrying another person while still legally married—is a criminal offence punishable by a minimum of five years' imprisonment without the option of a fine.
After hearing the warning, Peller appeared visibly surprised and immediately questioned why the issue of prison was being mentioned during what he believed should be a celebration of love.
