2027: Donald Duke Opens Up on Why He Wants to Be Nigeria’s Next President

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has explained why he decided to join the race for Nigeria’s presidency, saying his ambition is driven by a desire to address the country’s growing political, economic and leadership challenges.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the former Cross River State governor expressed concern over what he described as Nigeria’s long-standing leadership deficiency. Duke argued that despite several administrations and political transitions, the country has yet to experience the kind of leadership capable of delivering meaningful development and economic transformation.

According to him, successive leaders since the return to democratic governance have come into office with political ambitions and visions but have failed to present a clear leadership vision that could provide lasting solutions to Nigeria’s problems.

Duke said the country could have achieved far more if it had enjoyed the right kind of leadership, adding that frustration within the political system has continued to grow because governments have repeatedly failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

The former governor maintained that his decision to contest the presidency was based on his belief that he could provide the leadership needed to change the country’s direction and promote development and growth.

He also called for a more issue-based political campaign, urging politicians to move away from mudslinging and personal attacks. Instead, Duke said political leaders and presidential candidates should focus on presenting Nigerians with clear plans and practical solutions to the country’s numerous challenges.

According to him, one of Nigeria’s major problems has been the failure of past leaders to enter office with a properly articulated vision of what they intended to achieve. He argued that without a clear direction and leadership strategy, successive governments have continued to fall short of delivering the political and economic progress Nigerians desire.

Duke insisted that his presidential ambition is centred on filling what he sees as a major leadership gap in the country, promising to offer a clear vision aimed at addressing Nigeria’s political problems while driving development and economic growth.
