Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has sparked reactions online after sharing her views on the kind of relationship she expects to have with her son’s future wife.
The actress made the remarks during a live video in which she was chatting with her children and another child. While discussing family relationships, Aigbe stated that she believes she should come before her son’s wife when it comes to certain privileges and gifts.
According to the actress, her position is based on the fact that she gave birth to her son and breastfed him. She, however, stressed that her son would still be expected to take good care of his wife, whom she described as someone who would eventually be like a daughter to her.
Aigbe illustrated her point with an example involving a luxury Birkin bag. She said that if both she and her son’s wife requested the same bag, she expected her son to buy hers first.
“I don’t understand what you people are trying to do with my son; he is my son, and I gave birth to him. He is going to take good care of his wife because she will be like a daughter to me. If his wife and I ask him for a Birkin bag, he would buy it for me before his wife. I breastfed him,” she said.
Her comments have since generated conversations online, with social media users debating the boundaries between a mother’s relationship with her son and the expectations that may come with marriage.
While Aigbe maintained that her son’s wife would be treated like a daughter, her insistence on being prioritised in the hypothetical Birkin bag situation has become the major talking point from the video.
