“I Was Mocked for Having a Child Out of Wedlock” – Sophia Momodu Opens Up About Her Struggles (Video)

Sophia Momodu, the first baby mama of Nigerian music star Davido, has opened up about the emotional and social challenges she faced after having a child with the singer outside marriage.

Momodu shared her experience while speaking at Columbia University ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week, where she reflected on her journey as a mother and her experience being connected to a globally recognised celebrity.

According to Sophia, she became pregnant out of wedlock despite being the daughter of a pastor. She said the situation exposed her to intense stigma, mockery and negativity, forcing her to find inner strength while navigating the experience publicly.

She explained that although she became famous as a result of her relationship with a global superstar, she initially struggled to have her own voice heard.

Sophia said: “I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crazy. And I had to find my strength in the midst of all that.”

She further revealed that the public attention surrounding her relationship and motherhood often overshadowed her personal experiences.

According to her, she was popular and recognised by many people, but for a long time, she felt she did not have the freedom or platform to express herself.

Momodu said the stigma and negativity surrounding her situation eventually drowned out her own voice, making it difficult for people to understand her perspective and personal experiences.

She also recalled being advised by an aunt to remain silent about the situation because it was viewed as something Black women were not expected to discuss openly.

Sophia’s comments highlight her experience with societal expectations, motherhood outside marriage and the challenges of trying to establish her own identity and voice while being publicly connected to one of Africa’s biggest music stars.
