The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved its petition requesting a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
The family made this known through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026, stressing that the police re-investigation remains ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to the lawyer, the Aloba family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The petition reportedly raised concerns about inconsistencies in the previous investigation and called for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Ogungbe said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action. The family was later informed that the matter had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
The lawyer revealed that a representative of the family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had engaged with the officers handling the case.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter. The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process.”
The clarification came after the Federal High Court, Abuja, dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026.
However, Ogungbe stressed that the court case was separate from the family’s petition to the police. He said the suit was neither filed by the Aloba family nor instituted with its authority or consent.
The family therefore urged members of the public not to confuse the dismissal of the court case with the separate police investigation already initiated following its petition to the IGP.
The Aloba family also called on the police to conduct the fresh investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, while thoroughly examining all relevant individuals and circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
