Kwankwaso Explains Why He Wants Atiku to Step Down for Peter Obi in 2027

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained why he wants the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support NDC candidate Peter Obi.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso confirmed that he was indeed asking Atiku to step aside, citing their long-standing political relationship and the need for a new political arrangement ahead of the 2027 election.

The former Kano State governor said he recently met with a group of Fulani people from different parts of Nigeria who visited him for a courtesy call. He used the opportunity to encourage them to speak with Atiku and persuade him to reconsider his presidential ambition.

According to Kwankwaso, his position is influenced by his decades-long political dealings with Atiku, as well as his decision to align with Peter Obi under the NDC.

Kwankwaso also discussed the party’s position on fuel prices and subsidy, while outlining the political reasoning behind the proposed arrangement involving himself, Obi and other opposition figures.

His call for Atiku to step down comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties and politicians exploring possible alliances aimed at challenging the ruling party.
