Lagos E-Hailing Drivers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Fares, Commissions and Welfare

E-hailing drivers in Lagos State have embarked on an indefinite strike over concerns surrounding fare structures, platform commissions, deductions and their welfare.

The drivers, operating under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), announced the industrial action in a notice issued on Saturday, stating that the strike would begin on Monday and continue until further notice or satisfactory progress was made towards resolving their grievances.

AUATON, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), explained that the decision followed persistent concerns about operational policies, drivers’ earnings, working conditions, safety and security.

According to the union, repeated efforts by drivers and other stakeholders to draw attention to these challenges have yet to produce satisfactory results, prompting members to take industrial action.

The union stated that the strike was necessary to address issues affecting drivers’ income and the sustainability of their operations, particularly the deductions and commission arrangements imposed by ride-hailing platforms.

The action could disrupt transportation services across Lagos, as passengers who rely on app-based platforms may experience difficulties securing rides during the strike.

Meanwhile, AUATON has appealed to fleet owners and managers to provide temporary relief to drivers throughout the industrial action.

Specifically, the union urged them to suspend daily remittance obligations and related operational targets for the duration of the strike to reduce the financial pressure on drivers who may be unable to work.

The union maintained that the strike would remain in force until its concerns were adequately addressed or satisfactory progress was made in negotiations.

The development highlights the ongoing tensions between e-hailing drivers and the platforms through which they operate, particularly over earnings, commissions, working conditions and the financial demands placed on drivers.
