Mexico Approves Reno Omokri’s Appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador After Eight-Month Wait

The Mexican government has officially approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, bringing an end to an eight-month wait for the diplomatic clearance required to complete his posting.

Omokri announced the development in a post on X on Tuesday, October 20, expressing gratitude to God following the approval.

According to him, José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, delivered the formal diplomatic approval, known as an agrément, to Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In his announcement, Omokri said: “To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me.”

The approval follows President Bola Tinubu’s decision in March to approve the posting of 65 ambassador-designates and high commissioners to their respective countries, with Omokri assigned to Mexico.

However, his deployment had remained pending because the Mexican government had yet to communicate the formal diplomatic consent required to complete the appointment process.

Under diplomatic practice, an agrément is the receiving country’s formal consent to the appointment of a proposed ambassador. Its approval is an essential step before the appointment can proceed.

With Mexico’s approval now communicated, the delay surrounding Omokri’s posting has been addressed, clearing a major hurdle in the process of his diplomatic deployment.

The development marks a significant step in the former presidential aide’s transition into his new diplomatic role representing Nigeria in Mexico.
