Lagos Government to Summon Electricity Regulators, DisCos Over Persistent Power Supply Challenges

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to bring together electricity regulators, distribution companies (DisCos), resellers and suppliers to address the persistent power supply challenges affecting residents and businesses across the state.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed this during a press briefing ahead of the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit, scheduled to hold from November 10 to 12.

According to Ogunleye, the three-day summit will provide an opportunity for key stakeholders in the electricity sector to examine the structural problems affecting power supply and develop practical solutions to improve electricity distribution across Lagos.

He explained that the discussions would focus on major challenges within the sector, particularly issues surrounding regulation, electricity distribution, metering and the supply of alternative energy.

The planned engagement is part of the state government's efforts to identify the factors contributing to inadequate electricity supply and encourage cooperation among the various players responsible for delivering power to consumers.

Also speaking at the briefing, the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Ibilola Kasumu, explained that the forthcoming summit would take a different approach from previous editions.

She noted that rather than concentrating mainly on policy speeches and presentations, the organisers intended to present actual industry challenges to experts and encourage them to develop workable solutions.

“This summit is going to be different from the last one. It is not just going to be a talk shop. We are going to bring real problems to the table and look for solutions from different experts in this sector,” she said.

Kasumu's remarks suggest that the government wants the summit to produce practical recommendations that can address the difficulties experienced by electricity consumers rather than simply generate discussions.

The participation of regulators, distribution companies, resellers and suppliers is expected to allow stakeholders to examine the challenges affecting different stages of electricity delivery and explore ways to improve the sector.

The 2026 Lagos Energy Summit is therefore expected to serve as a platform for discussions on improving electricity supply, strengthening the state's energy system and finding lasting solutions to power-related challenges facing Lagos residents.
