Mr. Ferdinand Moolman, The Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of MTN Nigeria, has revealed that the activities of top companies like Instagram, Viber, and WhatsApp have adverse effects on their business and affects
the sustainability of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. Mr. Moolman stated this yesterday while emphasizing element affecting Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, at a hearing summoned by the Senate Committee on Communications. The hearing chaired by Adeola Olamilekan, the vice-chairman of the committee, was organised following the now suspended data hike by NCC. While identifying the factors, he said, “the consumption of operator revenues by not approved providers of “over-the-top” telecoms services who do not have any physical presence or pay any taxes; nor make any significant beneficence to employment or other socio-economic objectives of government in Nigeria.”
Mentioning WhatsApp, and others, the MTN boss pinned out that these companies were eroding gains of Nigeria’s telecom companies and asked Nigerian Government to take action like how UAE did. It all depends on we commoners now, should it be banned or not??
