Onyeka Onwenu, the iconic Nigerian singer and actress, passed away on Tuesday night, July 30, at the age of 72. The legendary artist reportedly died at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing suddenly.
Onwenu was attending a birthday party for Fidelity Bank MD, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, where she had performed on stage. After her performance, she returned to her seat and suddenly slumped. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the hospital, she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Born on May 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu had a remarkable career that spanned over four decades. She was not only a celebrated singer and songwriter but also made her mark as an actress, journalist, and politician. Her debut album, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984 under the Polygram label. She is best known for her hit songs "One Love," "Iyogogo," and "Ekwe."
