Nigerian Government Suspends Sale of N40,000 Rice

On Thursday, the Federal Government suspended the sale of subsidised 50kg bags of rice to civil servants, originally priced at N40,000. This decision was communicated in a circular addressed to Directors and Heads of Departments.

The circular, from the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, announced the withdrawal of an earlier internal circular issued on August 1, 2024, which had detailed the procedure for purchasing the rice. The memo, signed by Mrs. Jaiyesim Abimbola Aderonke, Director of Human Resource Management, has been revoked, leaving civil servants who registered for the subsidised rice uncertain about the next steps.

Although the plan was initially announced by Minister of Information Idris Mohammed to alleviate the current food crisis, no reason was given for the suspension. Further details are expected to be communicated later.
