Sola Sobowale Declares She's Not Ready for Retirement, Emphasizes Divine Purpose in Career

Nollywood actress Sola Sobowale, at 58, is far from considering retirement, as she emphasized during a recent appearance at the KAP Film and Television Academy workshop in Ikeja, Lagos. Speaking at the event, a collaboration between Kunle Afolayan's KAP Academy and the US Embassy, Sobowale shared her thoughts on career resilience and her sense of purpose, which she believes is divinely guided.

Addressing attendees, including renowned figures such as filmmaker Tunde Kelani and American director Angel Williams, Sobowale stated firmly, “I’m not ready to retire. I am just starting,” dispelling any notion that her career might be winding down. The actress, who is well-known for her roles in Nollywood, explained how she balances her family life with her thriving career, attributing much of her success to a higher calling.

“I keep saying God ordained me for a particular purpose. And that purpose is putting smiles on people’s faces,” Sobowale said. She went on to reflect on her passion for acting, noting that her talents extend beyond entertainment. “If I am not a doctor, I will be a preacher, a teacher, or an entertainer,” she added, underscoring her diverse interests and capabilities.

Acknowledging her loyal fan base, Sobowale expressed deep gratitude for their support, which she credited as key to her continued success. “You people made me relevant because you are supporting me. With God and you people around me, I am just starting. The sky is my beginning,” she said confidently.

Sobowale also took the opportunity to address the media’s tendency to spread unverified rumors, stating, “They can’t spoil my name.” She quoted a popular Yoruba proverb, “Who God has planted, no man can uproot,” reinforcing her faith and determination.

In May, Sobowale had to clarify rumors surrounding her alleged involvement in a drug trafficking incident in Saudi Arabia. She recalled the false report suggesting she had been arrested and killed while working in the Middle East, a story that shocked her fans until she returned to Nigeria, alive and well.
