Veteran Actress Toyin Afolayan, 'Lola Idije,' Reveals How Her Acting Career Began Unexpectedly

Respected Nollywood actress, Toyin Afolayan, popularly known as Lola Idije, has shared how her journey into the film industry was not part of her original plan.

Speaking in an interview on the Talk2Dunnis TV Official YouTube channel, the actress revealed that she had always dreamed of becoming a businesswoman. According to her, she never imagined herself in acting and would have dismissed any prophecy suggesting she would become an actress.

Afolayan explained that she often visited movie locations where her elder brother, the late filmmaker AdeLove, was working — not to act, but simply to enjoy free food and socialize with the actors.

However, her brother noticed something special in her and encouraged her to try acting. Although she initially refused, his word was final in their family. Even after arguments, she eventually obeyed his decision, which marked the beginning of her unexpected journey into Nollywood.

She said:

"My dream when I was younger was to become a businesswoman. I loved doing business so much that if someone had told me I would become an actress, I would have called it a lie. Most times, when my brother AdeLove was shooting on set, I went there just to eat and chat with actors. But I don't know what he saw in me. He insisted I would act, and when he decided something, nobody argued — not even our mother."

Afolayan also spoke about her personal life. She stated that many men approach her because of her fame, but she is no longer interested in dating. Her focus is now on her children and eagerly waiting for the day they give her grandchildren.

"Those coming to toast me are making a big mistake. They only want to gain from what I have. Some men approach me because I am popular, but I can't date anymore. My only priority is my children, and I want to see them giving birth to grandchildren who will call me grandma."

The actress’s story is a powerful reminder that destiny can take unexpected turns — and with determination and family support, success can come from the most surprising beginnings.
