"I Wasn't Called for Work for Two Years – My Colleagues Saw Me as a Threat" – Dele Odule Opens Up on 48 Years in Nollywood

Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule, a well-respected figure in the Yoruba movie industry, has candidly spoken about why he doesn’t consider himself a successful film producer.

In a recent interview with Oyinmomo, Odule revealed that he finds greater comfort and satisfaction acting in films directed by others, rather than taking on the responsibilities of producing his own movies. The seasoned actor pointed to financial management as his biggest hurdle when it comes to film production.

According to him, movie production is a business venture that requires a solid understanding of budgeting and financial control—an area he admits is not his strongest suit. He emphasized that without a firm grip on finances, turning a profit becomes difficult.

Despite having produced around ten movies in the past, Odule confessed that he’s uncertain about their profitability and isn’t even sure where the master copies of those films are today.

Still, he remains open to future opportunities. Odule expressed his willingness to return to producing—particularly for cinema or streaming platforms—if the right circumstances present themselves.

He said, “I’m not good at producing. I’ve never been a good producer. A good producer must know how to manage money, and I don’t know how to do that.”

“To be a good producer, you need to understand money management because production is a commercial venture. You need to be able to mak

e a profit from the investment, but I’m not good at that. That’s why I prefer acting because it’s where I excel.

“That said, I’ve produced about 10 movies, but I can’t say whether I made a profit.

“If you ask me about the master copies of those films today, I honestly don’t know where they are. That’s another sign that I’m not a good producer.

“Even though I’m not great at producing, if I get the opportunity, I’d love to produce a film for Netflix or the cinema. I wouldn’t do anything less than that.”

Veteran actor Odule shared a personal revelation, disclosing that he was once blacklisted from the movie industry for a period of two years. He explained that some in the industry saw him as a threat, which led to his temporary exclusion from acting roles.
