Modinat Aderemi, the third wife of the late veteran Yoruba actor Baba Olofaina, has shared the emotional and surprising story of how her relationship with the actor began, despite their age difference and his marital status.
In a recent interview on Kunle Afod’s YouTube channel, Modinat opened up about her early encounters with Baba Olofaina. She said they met while she was selling clothes at Oja Oba, a popular market in Ibadan. Baba Olofaina would often stop by her stall to greet her, which gradually caught her attention.
Although her friends were skeptical due to Baba Olofaina's older age and the fact that he was already married, the actor continued to express interest. He would take Modinat and her friends to the mall and even organize outings to stage plays at Mopo, hoping to win her heart.
Eventually, Baba Olofaina invited her to visit his house. Modinat admitted she was scared to go alone and worried he might take advantage of her. To ease her fears, she went with her friends. When they arrived, they were warmly welcomed by a woman Modinat thought was just a kind acquaintance. To her surprise, she later found out the woman was Baba Olofaina’s first wife, who had chosen not to reveal her identity during the visit.
Despite the awkward beginning, Modinat continued visiting the actor’s home regularly—often with friends—until Baba Olofaina began asking her to come alone, a sign that their bond was growing deeper.
Speaking about the experience, Modinat said:
“I used to sell clothes at Oja Oba. Anytime he passed by, he would stop to greet me. My friends didn’t like him because he was older and already married. But he kept taking us to the mall and stage plays to make us happy. When he finally invited me to his house, I felt scared and went with my friends. I met a woman there who was very kind—I didn’t know she was his first wife. She didn’t say anything about their relationship. That’s how I started visiting more often.”
Her story paints a picture of a relationship that started with uncertainty and caution, eventually blossoming into a connection strong enough to lead to marriage.
