"People think my real name is Oshodi-Oke" – Actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke clears the air on her famous name.

Veteran Yoruba actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke has clarified the real story behind her popular stage name, correcting widespread beliefs about its origin.

Speaking in a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV’s YouTube channel, Ronke revealed that many people wrongly assumed she earned the name “Oshodi-Oke” because of her curvy body. She explained that the nickname actually came from a movie—not her physique. “I was very slim when I joined the movie industry. My body had nothing to do with my rise to fame,” she said. “I got the name from one of my movies which started and ended in a place called Oshodi-Oke.”

Ronke went on to share interesting stories from her early career, recalling how she began working with NTA and later joined Charly Boy on a program called Candid Camera—a skit-style show that was ahead of its time. However, trouble began when one of their prank victims turned out to be a Chinese expatriate visiting former military ruler, General Sani Abacha.

The prank upset the man, who reported them to the presidency. Ronke revealed that Abacha was furious and considered arresting them. They were only saved by Charly Boy’s father, who was the Chief Justice of Nigeria at the time and pleaded on their behalf. Abacha personally called him and ordered that the show be cancelled.

Despite the setback, Ronke continued to grow in the industry, later featuring in other major shows like The Charly Boy Show, eventually becoming a household name.
