"From Single Room to Stardom" – Comic Actor Sanyeri Reflects on His Humble Beginnings (Video)

Popular Yoruba comic actor Olaniyi Afonja, widely known as Sanyeri, has remained a beloved figure in Nollywood for over two decades. Known for his exceptional talent and comedic timing, he is frequently listed among the top three funniest actors in the Nigerian film industry. With nearly 100 films to his name since his debut in 1992, Sanyeri has featured in many box office hits and earned multiple awards for his work.

In a recent interview, the seasoned actor opened up about his journey to stardom, sharing heartfelt stories about his struggles, triumphs, and vision for the future.

His Early Days in the Industry

Sanyeri recalled starting his acting career over 20 years ago, during a time when the Nigerian movie industry was far from glamorous. He described his beginnings as “rough and awkward,” noting that he often wore worn-out slippers and struggled to afford basic needs. He said his master, who introduced him to the theatre world, never gained widespread fame, but his role in Sanyeri’s life was divinely destined.

Role Models and Inspirations

Sanyeri cited several legendary Nigerian comedians as his inspirations, including Baba Suwe, Baba Otolo, Aluwe, Ojoge, Alaran, Latin, Lanko, and Ijesha. He said watching these veterans helped shape his craft and deepen his love for comedy.

Major Challenges and Arrest Experience

One of his most unforgettable moments was during a film shoot in 2003 for the movie Durosimi. He was working behind the scenes as part of the crew for his friend, Adebayo Tijani, when a violent conflict broke out in the town they were filming in. The police arrived, and Sanyeri ended up spending the night in a police cell — his first time ever being detained.

Happiest and Saddest Moments

Sanyeri described the happiest moment of his life as the day he was granted an American visa in 2012. It was his first time traveling abroad, and he was overwhelmed with joy and emotion. Despite not being fluent in English, he was amazed that he received the visa and started his international travel journey with a country like the United States.

On the flip side, his saddest moment came when he was denied a visa to Egypt, despite already having visited America and Canada. The rejection left him shocked, especially since five pages in his passport were used for the denial, compared to just one page for his U.S. and Canadian visas.

His Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Sanyeri hopes to elevate his career to international standards. He aspires to reach a level where he will charge clients by the hour instead of by the day. He dreams of becoming a top-tier comedian whose presence at events will be a luxury service.

Advice to Young Actors

To aspiring actors, Sanyeri emphasized the importance of professional training. He warned against relying solely on social media fame or shortcuts, saying such popularity may fade quickly without proper acting skills. He stressed that real success requires discipline, consistency, and commitment to learning.

Views on Social Media and Nudity

On the growing trend of nudity and public fights on social media, Sanyeri condemned the behavior. He stressed that no matter how famous one becomes, home training and good character should never be abandoned. He advised celebrities to resolve conflicts privately and avoid public altercations, as fans and young talents are watching and learning from their conduct.

Industry Relationships

Despite occasional conflicts with colleagues like Adebayo Tijani and Kamilu Compo, Sanyeri said disagreements are normal. However, he ensures that any issues are settled privately without making them public, to preserve unity and professionalism within the industry.

Sanyeri’s story is a powerful reminder that with talent, perseverance, and humility, greatness is achievable — even from the most modest beginnings.
