Fashion entrepreneur Veekee James has opened up about the difficult period she faced after marrying Femi Atere, revealing how online backlash almost pushed her into depression.
In an interview on the Nancy Isime Show, Veekee recalled how trolls accused her of “snatching” her husband from a close friend, spreading false stories that he had once been romantically involved with the friend before their marriage.
The designer, who tied the knot in October 2023 and later celebrated with elaborate weddings in Akwa Ibom and Lagos in 2024, said the lies hurt her deeply, but she overcame them with prayers and faith in God.
According to her, the ordeal was the hardest time of her life.
“There was one that really shook me. People said I stole him from a friend and that we were sleeping with each other. So many of them were lies, and it almost put me in depression. For the first time, I understood what people facing depression feel. I locked myself in my room for two days, crying and praying. I told God, ‘If you know all these are lies, help us get through it without it ruining my brand.’”
Veekee further described her recovery as a miracle, saying she no longer allows negative comments to get to her.
“The way God brought me out of it was like a miracle. Since then, it has become easy for me to laugh at such stories. My brother even advised me not to read comments, but I sometimes read them just to understand why I’m trending.”
She added that she now focuses on positivity, asking God for guidance and hoping to raise children who would grow up as role models in society.
