Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has expressed concern over the changing priorities in the Nigerian film industry, warning that passion and dedication are being replaced by an obsession with appearance.
In an interview with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Bimbo reflected on the early days of Nollywood when actors worked tirelessly without pay or comfort just to bring meaningful stories to life. She contrasted that era with today, where she believes glamour, makeup, and body enhancements often overshadow storytelling and talent.
“Now, people are saying, ‘My makeup isn’t right for this, I can’t wear that.’ Is that what the film is about? We are more concerned about our outfits and how we look,” she said.
She added that the growing trend of cosmetic surgery and body modifications reflects how the industry now prioritizes looks over substance. According to her, this focus is fleeting because “looks will fade, no matter what you do.”
Bimbo Akintola stressed that Nollywood must return to prioritizing content, realism, and artistry, warning that without passion, the industry risks losing its true essence.
