“I’m Ready to Drop My Presidential Ambition and Support a Younger Candidate,” Atiku Abubakar Reveals

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that he is willing to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presents a younger, vibrant and widely acceptable candidate.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, October 1, Atiku clarified that his political ambition is not driven by personal interest, but by a desire to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.

He called on young Nigerians to get involved in politics, assuring them of his full support if one of them is selected to run for president.

“I am not desperate for power. I only want to rescue Nigeria from those who have held it hostage,” Atiku stated.

He further revealed that he helped form the ADC as a platform to build strong opposition, claiming that internal sabotage within the PDP—allegedly influenced by the ruling APC—made it difficult to unite the party.

“Some PDP leaders were being used by the government to frustrate efforts to build a strong opposition,” he said.

“I would have fixed the party if people in key positions were willing to listen.”

Atiku’s statement has sparked early conversations about generational shift in Nigerian politics, with many now watching to see if a credible young contender will rise before 2027.
