Lionel Messi Considers Playing 2026 World Cup for Argentina

Football legend Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to play for Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but says his final decision will depend on how his body feels next year.

The 38-year-old Inter Miami striker, who led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, told NBC News that he is eager to help his team defend their title when the tournament kicks off in North America, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“It’s something extraordinary to play in a World Cup, and I would love to be there,” Messi said. “I’ll assess things day by day when I start preseason with Inter Miami next year to see if I can really be 100% and useful to the team.”

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, turns 39 next June and remains uncertain if his body will allow him to compete at the highest level once more.

Despite the uncertainty, the Argentine captain’s passion for the game and his national team remains strong.

“We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it again would be spectacular,” he added. “It’s always a dream to represent my country, especially in official competitions.”
