The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced new guidelines on how Nigerians should recite the national anthem during public and official events.
The directive, released on Thursday, October 16, outlines four key rules to standardize the anthem’s usage across the country.
According to the NOA:
Only the first stanza of the national anthem should be sung at regular official events.
The third stanza is now designated as the National Prayer and must be recited at the beginning of events.
All three stanzas should be sung only during major national occasions such as Independence Day, Presidential Inaugurations, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy Day (June 12), and the Inauguration of the National Assembly.
The National Pledge should be recited at the end of every event.
This update follows the decision made in May when President Bola Tinubu signed a bill restoring the former anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
The NOA says the new rules are meant to promote consistency, unity, and respect during national ceremonies.
