The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), inside the Federal High Court premises in Abuja on Wednesday, October 23.
Speaking to journalists, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said Sowore was arrested for allegedly leading protesters into a restricted area in violation of an existing court order. Hundeyin noted that the activist would face charges once investigations are concluded.
“Omoyele Sowore was arrested for leading people into a restricted area, contrary to a court order. The thirteen people previously arrested mentioned that Sowore led them there,” Hundeyin stated.
He explained that it would be unfair to prosecute only those initially arrested without including the person accused of leading them.
According to Hundeyin, eight protesters were arrested in front of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, and five others near the Ministry of Finance during the “Free Nnamdi Kanu” protest, making a total of thirteen suspects.
“They were arraigned the next day and didn’t spend up to 24 hours in custody,” he added, assuring that Sowore would also be arraigned soon.
The police spokesperson emphasized that the protest violated a restriction order meant to maintain public order in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
