“His Words Provoked Me” – Fayose Speaks on Obasanjo’s Controversial Speech

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has revealed that he was extremely angered by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments during Obasanjo’s 65th birthday celebration in Lagos, to the point where he briefly felt like grabbing the microphone and hitting him with it.

During the event, Obasanjo referenced his long-standing feud with Fayose, calling him “not the best” of his political protégés, while also acknowledging some of his achievements. Fayose described the remarks as subtle jabs and expressed frustration over being criticized on such a personal occasion.

In an interview with AF24 News on YouTube, Fayose explained that he had attempted to reconcile with political rivals, including Obasanjo, two weeks before the celebration. He reached out through a mutual friend, Osita Chidoka, emphasizing that the gesture was not an apology. “I never called to go and apologise to Baba. I did not offend him. He was the one who removed me from office. If anybody should apologise, it is he,” Fayose said.

Despite the tension, Fayose reported that Obasanjo was received warmly in advance, and he even covered $20,000 for Obasanjo’s travel logistics. However, during the event, Obasanjo insisted on speaking last, asked Fayose and his wife to stand beside him, and delivered a speech lasting one hour and 14 minutes, which Fayose found full of pointed remarks.

Fayose maintained his composure out of respect for the Vice President, but noted that Obasanjo’s actions showed no real interest in reconciliation. “If I knew this was how it would end, what do I need Obasanjo for? Am I contesting the election? Do I need his validation? No,” he said, underscoring his independence and resolve.

The incident highlights the continued tension between the former governor and the ex-president, despite efforts at reconciliation.
