Kannywood Mourns: Malam Nata’ala Dies After Long Cancer Battle



Popular Kannywood actor, Mato Na Mato, widely known as Malam Nata’ala, has passed away after a long illness.

Nata’ala, who hailed from Potiskum, Yobe State, was best known for his role as an almajiri school teacher in the popular Hausa drama series “Dadin Kowa” aired on Arewa24.

Before his death, the actor publicly appealed for financial assistance to cover his medical bills after revealing he was battling cancer. His plea drew national attention and prompted help from top figures.

Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, reportedly donated ₦27 million, while Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, also contributed ₦2 million toward his treatment.

In August 2025, Nata’ala expressed gratitude to Governor Buni and other politicians from Yobe State who supported him. He had shared details of his health challenges, explaining that he underwent surgery at Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, but the cancer later resurfaced, causing his stomach to swell again.

Sadly, despite all medical efforts and public support, Malam Nata’ala lost his battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans of Hausa cinema.
