Nigerian singer Waje Breaks Silence on Early Pregnancy and Struggles as a Single Teen Mom

Nigerian singer Waje has opened up about her difficult journey as a teenage mother, revealing how she got pregnant at 16 and faced rejection from her daughter’s father.

Speaking during an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, Waje shared that she hid the pregnancy from her mother for about five months. When her mom eventually found out, she confronted the man’s family — but the young man denied being responsible for the pregnancy.

“In Igbo land, when a child is born out of wedlock, the family automatically adopts the child,” Waje recalled. “So my mom told him, ‘Since it’s not you, the child is mine now.’”

Waje revealed that years later, the man resurfaced, wanting to reconnect with their daughter. She said she only agreed on one condition — that he would fight for his child’s rights since he was a Canadian citizen and could help secure better education for her.

However, Waje said the man kept delaying a DNA test, and after waiting for years, he still didn’t go through with it. By the time her daughter turned 18, it was too late for him to take any legal steps on her behalf.

“I was angry,” Waje admitted. “Now she’s in university, and I’m paying school fees in dollars. You can’t be calling to say you want to send $200 — we could have avoided all this.”

Despite everything, Waje said her main focus has always been her daughter’s happiness and success, emphasizing that she has worked hard to provide her with the best opportunities in life.
