Wunmi Aloba Takes a Stand Against Family’s Surname Ban

The tension between the family of the late singer Mohbad and his widow, Omowunmi, has deepened after she openly ignored their directive to stop using the Aloba surname until the court-ordered DNA test is concluded.

Earlier, the Aloba family, through the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, released a statement insisting that Wunmi should no longer use the family name. They claimed that Mohbad and Wunmi were never legally or traditionally married, saying the required Yoruba marital rites—especially the payment of bride price—were not completed.

Because of this, they directed her to stop using the surname in both public and private records.

But Wunmi quickly fired back.

On Thursday, November 13, she updated her Instagram story boldly calling herself “Wunmi Aloba” and urging fans to support her business, adding, “Liam Aloba needs to be taken care of,” referring to her son.

The Aloba family also announced a team of three administrators to oversee Mohbad’s assets, royalties, and intellectual property. They added that full recognition of Wunmi and her son Liam in the estate matters will depend on the DNA test confirming Mohbad as the father

Meanwhile, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, strongly condemned the family’s directive, describing it as illegal and purely emotional. He stated that the law protects her right to keep the name her husband gave her.

According to him, “Nobody can stop her from bearing Aloba. The Supreme Court has ruled that no one owns a surname. She has every right to keep it.”

He also insisted that Wunmi is not avoiding the DNA test, saying, “They are the ones running from the DNA. We have always been ready — even if it’s today or tomorrow.”
