Lawmaker Raises Alarm Over Alleged Alteration of Newly Passed Tax Laws

A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, has raised serious concerns over what he described as changes made to the newly passed tax bills after they were approved by the National Assembly.

Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary session, Dasuki alleged that the gazetted copy of the new tax laws currently in circulation does not fully match the version that was jointly harmonised and passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The lawmaker said he reviewed the gazetted document over the past few days and compared it with the official records of proceedings and voting from both chambers. According to him, he discovered noticeable differences in some clauses.

Dasuki stated that his parliamentary privilege had been breached, stressing that he was present during the voting process and that his vote was properly counted. However, he expressed shock that the final document being presented to Nigerians appears different from what lawmakers approved.

He called on the Speaker of the House to carefully review the harmonised version passed by the Senate and the House alongside the gazetted copy made public.

According to Dasuki, Nigerians are currently being presented with a version of the tax laws—especially through the Ministry of Information—that does not reflect what was actually passed by the National Assembly.

His comments have sparked concern within the chamber, as the allegation suggests possible alterations to important legislation after it had already been approved by lawmakers.
