Aregbesola Warns APC: Governors’ Support Does Not Guarantee 2027 Victory

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that the defection or support of many governors does not automatically guarantee victory in the 2027 general election.

Aregbesola made this statement while speaking at the launch of a book written by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary. He said there is a growing but worrying belief that a political party will win elections simply because many governors are backing it.

According to him, recent election results in Nigeria clearly disprove this idea. He explained that the outcome of the last general election showed that the number of governors supporting a party does not always determine its success at the polls.

To support his argument, Aregbesola referred to the 2023 general election, using results from the South-West and South-East regions as examples. He said that despite the APC controlling most states in the South-West at the time, the party secured only about 55 per cent of the votes in the region.

He stressed that voters make their own choices and that political realities go beyond the influence of state governors. Aregbesola advised political parties not to rely solely on the support of governors but to focus more on winning the trust and confidence of the electorate ahead of 2027.
