Federal Government Commissions Solar-Powered CCTV Centre for Second Niger Bridge

The Federal Government has commissioned a solar-powered Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Monitoring Centre for the Second Niger Bridge as part of efforts to improve road security and modernise Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, said the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s plan to upgrade the nation’s road network and strengthen security systems across major highways.

During his visit, the minister also inspected the ongoing construction of the Asaba section, known as Section 2A, of the Second Niger Bridge bypass road. He equally assessed the rehabilitation work on the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway.

Speaking during the inspection, Umahi explained that the 17.5-kilometre bypass road is designed to divert heavy traffic away from Asaba township. He described the project as a major step toward easing congestion around the Second Niger Bridge corridor.

Umahi revealed that the bypass project, which is valued at N179 billion, was redesigned using reinforced concrete pavement. He added that the road will be equipped with solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras to enhance safety and monitoring.

According to the minister, the quality of work on the project is impressive, and the pace of construction is encouraging. He also disclosed that the Federal Government plans to commission the first half of the bypass road by April 28.

The project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, security, and overall road safety in the area once completed.
