Four Rivers Lawmakers Reverse Decision, Declare Support for Fubara’s Impeachment

There has been a new development in the impeachment process against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as four members of the State House of Assembly have withdrawn their earlier call for peace and declared support for the impeachment proceedings.

The lawmakers are the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo; Peter Abbey, who represents Degema Constituency; Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I; and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II.

The four lawmakers made their decision public on Friday during a live broadcast from the front of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. This came just days after they had openly called for an amicable and political resolution to the ongoing crisis between the Assembly and the governor.

Speaking during the broadcast, Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo recalled that on January 12, 2026, he and Peter Abbey had addressed the media and appealed to their colleagues to seek a peaceful and political solution to the standoff with the governor.

However, Nwankwo said the lawmakers later observed that Governor Fubara and his deputy had allegedly allowed their media aides and supporters to continue attacking the House of Assembly instead of embracing dialogue.

According to him, this development forced a change in their position. He stated that based on what they described as continued media attacks against the Assembly, they have now decided that the impeachment process against the governor should continue.

The announcement marks a fresh twist in the political crisis rocking Rivers State, as the impeachment proceedings gain renewed backing from lawmakers who had previously called for reconciliation.
