Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke has raised concerns over what he described as unequal treatment between Nigerian musicians and actors.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the actor spoke about the lack of balance in how creatives support one another in Nigeria. He pointed out that while Nigerian musicians enjoy massive recognition, strong fan support, and global promotion, Nollywood actors, actresses, and filmmakers do not receive the same level of appreciation.
Gideon noted that many Nigerian music stars proudly identify with labels such as the “big three” or “big five” and are widely hyped both locally and internationally. However, he observed that these same artists rarely promote Nigerian films or openly support actors and filmmakers, even though platforms like Netflix have helped expose Nollywood to a global audience.
His comments sparked mixed reactions online. Some social media users agreed with his view, saying Nollywood lacks the financial strength and structure of the music industry. Others strongly disagreed, arguing that many Nollywood movies are unrealistic, predictable, and not of international standard. A few commenters also said actors need to improve the quality of their productions before expecting more hype and recognition.
While some fans defended Nollywood stars like Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham, noting their box office success, others dismissed Gideon’s comments, saying he spoke at length without offering clear solutions.
