Yomi Fabiyi Writes Open Letter to Wizkid Over Fela Kuti Controversy

Actor and activist Yomi Fabiyi has addressed music star Wizkid in an open letter following the growing controversy surrounding comments linked to the legacy of late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

The issue started after Seun Kuti accused Wizkid’s fans of repeatedly dragging his father’s name into online music debates. The situation later escalated when Wizkid was perceived to have declared himself bigger than the late Afrobeat legend, a statement that sparked outrage and mixed reactions on social media.

Reacting to the situation, Yomi Fabiyi appealed directly to Wizkid, urging him not to be tempted to erase the tattoo of Fela Kuti he has on his body. He advised the singer to manage the situation calmly, describing the backlash as a storm that must be handled with wisdom.

In his words, Fabiyi reminded Wizkid that he represents a revolution and an important chapter in Nigerian and Afrobeat music history. He acknowledged Wizkid’s global success and influence but stressed that Fela Kuti remains a pioneer whose impact went beyond music.

Fabiyi explained that Fela stood for giving voice to the voiceless, fighting corruption, making sacrifices, and contributing to the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He described Fela’s music as a movement, not just entertainment.

He also praised Wizkid for previously honoring Fela’s legacy, noting that the singer has attended several Felabration events, tattooed Fela’s image on his body, and spoken highly of him in documentaries. According to Fabiyi, these actions showed Wizkid’s genuine respect for the late legend, adding that the recent situation could have been handled better.

In his closing message, Fabiyi encouraged Wizkid to continue celebrating Fela and to walk the path of honour and peace. He described Wizkid as a big star, a living legend, and a national asset, stressing that both Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Wizkid deserve equal respect.

“I don’t compare because comparison proves nothing,” Fabiyi said, as he wished Wizkid long life and greater achievements ahead.

The letter has since drawn attention online, with many social media users commending Fabiyi for promoting respect, unity, and balance between generations of Afrobeat greats.
