A Lagos court has chosen three facilities for the DNA testing of Liam, the son of the late singer Mohbad, amid an ongoing dispute between the singer’s family and his widow. Two of the facilities are located in the UK, while one is in the US. Each party—Mohbad’s father, his widow Wunmi, and the court—had a say in selecting the facilities to ensure neutrality and transparency.
The DNA test is part of a long-standing disagreement over Liam’s paternity, which has persisted since Mohbad’s death in 2023. The singer’s father had requested the test, emphasizing that confirming paternity is critical for the child’s welfare and his mother’s legal responsibilities. Wunmi, Mohbad’s widow, did not oppose the application, prompting the court to grant the order.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for April 7, 2026, when DNA samples will be collected under strict supervision. Samples will be sent overseas with all parties present to ensure fairness.
Following the late singer’s death, his family barred Wunmi from using their surname in any record until paternity is legally confirmed, stating there was no statutory or customary marriage between Mohbad and Wunmi. Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, condemned the family’s actions as illegal and obstructive, accusing them of frustrating the DNA process despite prior court orders.
The dispute also involves the management of Mohbad’s estate, with Wunmi taking legal steps to protect her late husband’s property from unauthorized claims. Mohbad’s father reiterated that a DNA test is essential to clarify the child’s parentage and addressed alleged complications around bride price and wedding formalities, claiming Mohbad had initially planned to formalize the marriage but later withdrew over alleged unfaithfulness.
This case highlights ongoing tensions over Mohbad’s legacy and the rights of his child and widow, with the upcoming DNA test seen as a key step toward resolution.
