DSS to Arraign Nasir El-Rufai Over Alleged Cybercrime and Security Breach

The Department of State Services (DSS) is set to arraign former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai on February 25 over alleged cybercrime and breach of national security.

The case has been assigned to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court after the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, directed that the matter be handled by her.

According to earlier reports, the DSS filed a three-count criminal charge against El-Rufai. The charges are linked to allegations that he was involved in the unlawful interception, or wiretapping, of the telephone lines of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, was filed by the Nigerian secret police. The DSS accused the former governor of violating the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, as well as the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

In the charge, El-Rufai was alleged to have made certain statements on February 13 while appearing as a guest on Arise TV’s Prime Time Programme in Abuja. During the interview, he was said to have admitted that he and others unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser.

The alleged offence is said to be punishable under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.

The case is expected to draw national attention as proceedings begin later this month.
