NBA Slams Sowore Over Courtroom Conduct, Warns Against Disrupting Judiciary

The Nigerian Bar Association has strongly criticised the conduct of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore during a court proceeding in Abuja, describing his actions as unacceptable.

In a detailed statement released on Wednesday, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau said Sowore’s behaviour at the Federal Capital Territory High Court did not reflect the respect expected within a courtroom. He stressed that the court is a sacred place where order, discipline, and respect must always be maintained.

According to Maikyau, while Nigerians are free to express dissatisfaction or challenge authority, such actions must be done in a lawful and respectful manner. He warned that any behaviour capable of interrupting court proceedings or reducing public confidence in the judiciary poses a serious threat to the justice system.

The NBA further noted that actions like this could weaken trust in legal institutions if not addressed, adding that the judiciary must remain protected from any form of disruption or intimidation.

He also called on lawyers, litigants, and the general public to always uphold courtroom decorum, reminding them that respect for legal processes is a key pillar of democracy.

The association concluded by reaffirming its commitment to defending the integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld at all times.
