SSANU Warns Federal Government, Threatens Strike Over Ongoing Negotiations

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned the Federal Government over delays in the ongoing renegotiation process with university-based unions, threatening possible industrial action if talks are not concluded by the end of April.

The warning was issued by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) after a special meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja, where leaders reviewed the current state of negotiations.

In a communiqué signed by SSANU National President, Muhammad Ibrahim, the union clarified that discussions with the government are still ongoing and no final agreement has been reached.

The council also raised concerns about what it described as misleading reports suggesting that the renegotiation process had already been concluded. It specifically addressed claims about an alleged approval of a 30 percent increase in allowances, stating that no such agreement has been finalized.

SSANU stressed that it would not accept any outcome that falls below what has been discussed during negotiations. The union also insisted that fairness, due process, and proper collective bargaining must be respected.

The development has increased tension within the education sector, as stakeholders await the outcome of the negotiations and the possibility of industrial action if an agreement is not reached soon.
