Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared that no one, including members of his family, should be treated as being above the law. He said security agencies should arrest even his own son if he is found guilty of committing any crime.
The governor made the statement while receiving the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Osogbo.
Adeleke's remarks followed allegations by the Inspector-General that the Osun State Commissioner of Police had reported that some criminal suspects wanted by the police were allegedly hiding around the Government House area.
Dismissing the allegation, the governor insisted that his administration does not protect criminals and has maintained a zero-tolerance policy against crime since he assumed office. He stressed that neither his political associates nor members of his family should receive special treatment if they violate the law.
According to Adeleke, anyone found guilty of a crime should face justice, saying that even if it were his own son, he should be arrested and allowed to learn from his actions.
The governor also expressed concern over what he described as the unprofessional conduct of some police officers. He questioned the reported transfer of a police officer who arrested a suspect linked to the killing of a 14-year-old boy in Ilobu, arguing that the officer was only carrying out his lawful duty.
Adeleke warned that transferring officers after they perform their responsibilities professionally could discourage others from carrying out their duties without fear or favour.
Despite raising the concerns, the governor praised Inspector-General Olatunji Disu for his commitment to discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. He welcomed the police chief's assurance that misconduct would not be tolerated and urged officers to enforce the law fairly, without political influence or favoritism.
Adeleke added that he remains confident that the current police leadership will continue to promote accountability and ensure that justice is applied equally to every Nigerian.
