Veteran Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has officially announced his retirement from elite football officiating, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned more than a decade at the highest level of the game.
The 47-year-old Manchester-born official revealed that the relentless pressure and constant public scrutiny associated with top-level refereeing played a significant role in his decision to step away from the profession.
Taylor, who was promoted to the Premier League referee list in 2010, officiated an impressive 668 professional domestic matches during his career. Widely regarded as one of England's most accomplished referees, he took charge of every major domestic cup final and earned a reputation for handling some of football's biggest fixtures with professionalism and consistency.
On the international stage, Taylor enjoyed an equally distinguished career, officiating at four major tournaments, including the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, as well as the UEFA Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 championships. In total, he oversaw 163 international matches, cementing his place among the world's elite referees.
His final appearance came earlier this month when he officiated the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash between Portugal and Spain, marking the end of an era in his officiating career.
Explaining his decision, Taylor described refereeing at the highest level as an "immense privilege" but admitted that the demands of the role had become increasingly challenging.
He noted that while he had thoroughly enjoyed his time officiating elite football, the intense pressure and continuous scrutiny made it the right moment to move on and embrace the next chapter of his career.
Tributes have since poured in from across the football community, with Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief refereeing officer Howard Webb praising Taylor's outstanding contribution to the sport.
Webb described him as one of the most successful referees English football has ever produced, commending his professionalism, consistency, and dedication throughout his career. He also highlighted Taylor's ability to earn the trust required to officiate the biggest domestic and international matches, thanking him for his years of service and wishing him success in his future endeavours.
Taylor's retirement marks the conclusion of an illustrious officiating journey, leaving behind a legacy as one of the Premier League's most experienced and respected referees.
