“Don’t Tell Me I Don’t Look Sick” – Kemi Afolabi Reacts to Comments About Her Health, Vows to Speak Up More

Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi has responded to people who question the severity of her health challenges because she does not always appear visibly sick.

The actress took to social media to express her frustration with comments from people telling her, “But you don’t look sick.” She explained that people who have never experienced the fear of going to bed uncertain about whether they would wake up because of their condition should not make such remarks.

Afolabi revealed that she has previously endured and handled several situations she was unhappy about in order to maintain peace. However, she said she has decided to stop keeping quiet about issues that affect her because she believes stress and emotional trauma have negatively affected her health.

According to the actress, she has been medically informed that trauma contributes to her health challenges by triggering inflammation and chronic lupus flares.

She said she intends to become more vocal about her experiences and advocate for herself as well as others living with health challenges who are trying to maintain their daily lives and pursue their dreams.

Afolabi stressed that she has nothing to prove to anyone and does not want pity from people. She also asked people to respect her boundaries rather than make assumptions about her condition based on her appearance.

She wrote:

“If you’ve never gone to bed wondering if you’re gonna wake up the next day because of how your body is doing, please don’t ever tell me, ‘But you don’t look sick.’”

The actress added that she would no longer sacrifice her wellbeing simply to keep the peace, noting that she intends to speak up more and prioritize herself.

She also expressed gratitude to God for giving her strength throughout her health struggles, stating that she knows she is not handling everything through her own strength.
